                                                Overview of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Application

                                                        Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are very similar to AC induction motors or brushless DC motors (BLDC). They all have permanent magnetic rotors and wound stators.

                                                 
                                                       PMSM motors usually use sine wave control, and BLDC motors usually use trapezoidal signal control, trapezoidal signal is also called six-step commutation.


                                                       The sinusoidal control of PMSM is highly efficient, and the motor operates smoothly, which minimizes vibration and reduces noise. The use of field-oriented control (FOC) technology for PMSM motors also minimizes the torque ripple and electromagnetic interference generated by the system. PMSM motors can provide higher power density when compared to AC induction motors (ACIM) in size.

Knowing the rotor position is very important to efficiently control the PMSM motor. The position of the rotor can be detected by a Hall sensor or a rotary encoder connected to the motor.                                                        The rotor position can also be estimated by using the back-EMF voltage information. This feedback control mode does not require the use of sensors and additional wiring. The position or speed estimator can also be used to calculate the rotor position.


                                                       The integrated high-speed 12-bit ADC converter, high-resolution pulse width modulator (PWM) and quadrature encoder input (QEI) on the C2000 MCU make it suitable for implementing PMSM motor control. The C2000 MCU core can execute complex mathematical functions in a short time, making this MCU series an ideal choice for implementing vector control technology and controlling multiple motors at the same time. This series of PWM has a programmable dead-time delay and can drive high-side and low-side gate drivers.


                                                       The Stellaris? series MCUs provide ARM-based solutions to customers who prefer open-architecture cores. These MCUs also provide integrated ADC, motor control-specific PWM and QEI inputs for sensor control. Its hardware-based fault detection system can shut down the system faster without software intervention. These MCUs can also be used to implement scalar and vector control techniques.

                                                       Digital isolators have logic input and output buffers, which are isolated by silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation barriers, which provide 4kV isolation. When used in conjunction with isolated power supplies, these devices can block high voltages, isolate the ground, and prevent noise currents from entering the local ground and interfering with or damaging sensitive circuits.
